With proper care, your new teeth could very well last for the rest of your life! While several factors go into their impressive longevity, the materials used to make them play a major role in their ability to stand the test of time. What are dental implants usually made of, and how do these materials affect their lifespan? This blog post explains.

Dental Implant Posts Use Titanium for Strength

Most dental implants have three main parts. The post, sometimes simply referred to as a dental implant, is what gets inserted into your jawbone. An abutment is a small connector piece that gets attached to the post and helps the new teeth to stay in place.

In most cases, posts and abutments are made of medical-grade titanium alloy. Not only is titanium biocompatible (meaning that it works well within the human body), but it is also highly resistant to corrosion. Moreover, it is impressively strong, so it can endure all the pressures of everyday use. Studies have shown that the majority of titanium implants endure for decades.

In recent times, some patients have chosen to get zirconia implant posts. Zirconia is a ceramic material. Although it is strong and durable, there is limited research on its longevity when it is used in implant treatment.

Dental Implant Restorations: Acrylic vs. Porcelain

The crowns, bridges, and dentures that get attached to dental implants, known as restorations, are also built to last.

Often, they are made of porcelain, a durable and aesthetically pleasing material that closely mimics the appearance of natural teeth. Often, porcelain crowns last 10 – 15 years before replacement is required, though they may last longer in some cases.

Another material that made be used for restorations is acrylic. It is somewhat softer than porcelain, so it may not last as long.

Take Good Care of Your Implants to Help Them Last

Regardless of what materials your implants are made of, a large portion of the responsibility for their longevity lies with you. Be sure to maintain excellent oral hygiene, attend regular dental visits, and adhere to other good practices. Hopefully, your prosthetic teeth will keep you smiling confidently for many years to come!

Meet the Practice

At Abington Family Dental Care, our team partners with local specialists to provide comprehensive dental implant services.
